When did you first start with Bull City CrossFit?: June 2014
What is your favorite movement? Favorite workout? I really enjoy it all because it challenges me. If I had to pick – box jumps, sprints and rope climbs.
What is your least favorite movement? Least favorite workout? I am learning to love kettlebell swings and wall balls.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background: I was always active in grade school, bouncing between one sports team or another. Once I got into college I switched gears and I really got into running and triathlons. Since starting college I have raced a 50k, three marathons, 10+ half marathons and a half-ironman (70.3).
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Do you remember your first WOD? How did it go? I have a good friend that has been doing CrossFit for years and she had been trying to talk me into going since grad school. I happened to see the Groupon for Bull City Crossfit and figured- why not? Summer is the off-season for running and I had been telling myself that I wanted to get stronger so it just seemed that everything aligned to give it a go. The only thing I remember about my first WOD was that rope climbs were our skill of the day. My middle school self was not efficient at rope climbs and I remember laughing to myself and thinking- “there is no way in hell that I am going to be able to climb that rope and touch the ceiling”. Sure enough after Jack took me through all the steps and proper technique I gave rope climbs a try and managed to climb to the top and touch the ceiling! I was so stoked! As for the rest of the WOD…I honestly couldn’t tell you. I was hooked after the rope climb…ask any of my running friends. I talked about it for days afterwards!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit? Overall, I am in awe of how strong I have become in the few short months since starting CrossFit. What I am even more stoked about is how this has transferred over into my running. I am faster than I was at this time last year and I cannot wait to see how racing this fall goes.
What is your favorite CrossFit/BCCFmoment? Most recently it has to be the Saturday workout that consisted of me working with another girl to lift 10,000 lbs over our heads. We were dead last to finish on Saturday, but everyone stayed and supported/cheered us on. I remember starting that workout wondering if it was even possible. Just completing it and having the support there was awesome.
What is your advice for people just getting started or thinking about starting CrossFit? Definitely give it a try! What I love about CrossFit is that there is something for everyone and always room to improve. If you a runner thinking about starting, go talk to the coaches and let them know what your goals are or what questions you have. I love that BCCF has helped me tailor my workouts to improve my running.
What are your hobbies, interests, and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I just got my PhD in Marine Science from NC State and am now working on a postdoc in geoscience research and education. Outside of BCCF I am an avid runner, enjoy hanging out with my friends/family/husband and an art enthusiast (photography junkie and painter). Lastly, I volunteer at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle hospital as often as possible to help care for sea turtles.
